After close to four weeks on the picket line, on Wednesday UPEI Faculty Association members made it clear that they are committed to reaching a negotiated settlement to end the strike, rejecting UPEI’s repeated calls for binding arbitration. In a poll held by secret ballot, more than 75% of members supported this option.
According to UPEIFA President Dr. Michael Arfken, “This result after almost a month of strike underlines FA members’ commitment to the principles for which we initiated the strike to begin with: UPEI is facing systemic problems that threaten the future of the University, and our members are committed to solving those problems. Our members want to get back to class, we all want to get back to our students. But since we know that binding arbitration will not address our members major concerns, they have made it clear that the only way to end this strike is a negotiated settlement.”
Earlier today, the UPEIFA sent an offer to UPEI President Dr. Greg Keefe, which if accepted, could end the strike. The FA hopes to hear from UPEI without delay.
